Bed Bugs are found throughout the world and have become an increasing problem in the United States. This bug received its name from its close association with human sleeping beds where it seeks refuge during daylight coming out to feed only at night. This insect feeds primarily on humans but will also feed on poultry and other mammals.
Adults are approximately 3/16 inch long, broadly oval and flat, brown in color to a reddish brown after feeding. They also emit an obnoxiously sweet odor from scent glands. Females lay 1-5 tiny white eggs per day deposited and secured in cracks or on rough surfaces. One female can lay over 500 eggs in a lifetime. Developmental time takes between 21-120 days depending on temperature.
Bed bugs harbor in cracks and crevices during the day feeding at night. They can be found around mattresses, boxsprings, their coverings and other bedding and furniture. They can live in wall voids and travel almost anywhere. They can go without feeding for 80-140 days making eradication and control a unique challenge.
